Frances Louise McDormand (geb. Cynthia Ann Smith, 23. Juni 1957) ist eine amerikanische Film-, Bühnen- und Fernsehschauspielerin. McDormand begann ihre Karriere auf der Bühne und gab ihr Debüt auf der Leinwand im Film Blood Simple von 1984, nachdem sie seitdem in mehreren Theater- und Fernsehrollen aufgetreten war. McDormand wurde für ihre Leistungen in Mississippi Burning" (1988), Short Cuts" (1993), Fargo" (1996), Wonder Boys" (2000), Almost Famous" (2000), North Country" (2005), Moonrise Kingdom" (2012), Hail, Caesar!" ausgezeichnet. (2016) und "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" (2017).
Im Laufe ihrer Karriere wurde sie für acht Golden Globes, fünf Academy Awards, vier BAFTA Awards und drei Emmy Awards nominiert. Sie ist eine der wenigen Künstlerinnen, die die "Triple Crown of Acting" erreicht hat und einen Academy Award, einen Primetime Emmy Award und einen Tony Award gewonnen hat. Ihren ersten Oscar als beste Schauspielerin erhielt sie 1997 für ihre Rolle als Marge Gunderson in'Fargo'. Sie gewann auch die beste Nebendarstellerin der Broadcast Film Critics Association, des Florida Film Critics Circle und der Los Angeles Film Critics Association für ihre Leistung in Wonder Boys" (2000).
